Mostafa S · August 27, 2025

Do you want to explain the story of Prophet Lut in the Quran to your children simply and easily? If your answer is yes, you are in the right place! In a world where everyone is tiptoeing around the gender definition and embracing diversity, it's important to understand what our religion tells us on the matter!

We all want our kids to follow Allah's commands and lead a righteous life. This can be challenging in a world where everyone is influenced by one another. Following trends, experiencing new things, and absorbing various thoughts and beliefs have become the new norm.

One of these is having the desire to be with the same gender as a spouse or romantic partner instead of being with someone of the opposite gender. This is referred to as being gay (for men) or lesbian (for women), which is a huge sin, and practicing it is absolutely forbidden in Islam.

That's why it's really important for kids to understand the consequences of this and also to have a religious reference and cornerstone in their beliefs that they can go back to and rely on.

Nothing speaks of this matter and explains it fully as the story of Prophet Lut! It's not only about the punishment when people ignore Allah's teaching; it's also about patience, resilience, and the importance of standing firm in faith, even when faced with overwhelming opposition.

Today, we’ll explore the story of Prophet Lut, uncovering its lessons and warnings.

Who Was Prophet Lut in Islam?

Prophet Lut (AS) was one of Allah's messengers. He was also the nephew of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Allah chose him to guide the people of Sodom. What is Sodom? Sodom is located today in Palestine. In Prophet Lut's time, the people of Sodom strayed far from moral and ethical principles.

It was the most corrupt city known for the highest criminal activity. Travelers passing through Sodom were often robbed and sometimes even murdered. But the most notorious act of evil of the people of this nation was a sin like no other!

Prophet Lut’s Journey

Prophet Lut left Egypt with his uncle, Prophet Ibrahim, and went to Canaan, where Allah SWT made him a prophet and ordered him to go to Sodom to call the people to worship Allah, abandon their sinful ways, and follow the righteous path! Prophet Lut's mission was not easy.

The city was full of sinners who rejected all forms of guidance. He faced opposition, mocking, and hostility.

"Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me." Surah Ash-Shu'ara (26:161-163)

The People of Sodom and Their Rejection

The people of Sodom were so corrupt that they introduced the world to a sin that no one had practiced before! They were the first nation in which men desired to be with men instead of women! They were going against the human nature that Allah SWT instilled in all of us!

"And [we sent] Lut when he said to his people, 'Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing person.'" Surah Al-A'raf (7:80-81)

Not only did they disobey Allah, but they even laughed at the idea that he would punish them as Lut warned them! But little did they know that Allah's wrath is not to be underestimated! So what was the turning point in the story of the Prophet Lut? Let's find out!

In Surah Al-Qamar (54:33-39), Allah vividly describes the fate of the people of Sodom:

"The people of Lut denied the warning. Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lut—We saved them before dawn as a favor from Us.

Thus do We reward he who is grateful. And he had already warned them of our assault, but they disputed the warning. And they demanded him to hand over his guests, so We obliterated their eyes, [saying], 'Taste My punishment and warning.'”

The Angels’ Message to Prophet Lut

The turning point in the story of Prophet Lut (AS) came when Allah sent angels to test the people one last time! The angels visited Prophet Lut’s home disguised as handsome travelers. Prophet Lut hid them in his home without knowing who they were.

He was afraid that the people of the city would harm them. However! His wife, not a believer as he was, informed the people of the city about the handsome travelers, so they all came knocking at Lut's door! Prophet Lut again tried to make the people go back to the righteous path. However, none listened!

"And the people of the city came rejoicing. [Lut] said, 'Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me. And fear Allah and do not disgrace me.' They said, 'Have we not forbidden you from [hosting] people?' [Lut] said, 'These are my daughters—if you would be doers [of lawful marriage].' By your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly. So the shriek seized them at sunrise."

The angels then warned Prophet Lut of the punishment Allah would send upon the people of Sodom. They told him to leave the city with his family at night (except for his wife because she was a supporter of sodom people!). They told him to leave and never look back as Allah SWT delivered his punishment!

"So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them, and let not anyone among you look back, and continue on to where you are commanded. And We conveyed to him the decree of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by morning." In Surah Al-Hijr (15:65-66),

And so it was! As dawn broke and Prophet Lut left, the punishment descended upon Sodom. The earth shook violently, and the city was turned upside down and then crashed onto land! Stones of hard clay with each disbeliever's name rained down from the sky over them; it was the end of Sodom people.
